The Amazing Artwork of Fedora 10

Since quite early on, Linux Loop has been covering the evolving Fedora 10 artwork. Fedora has a long track record of producing amazing themes and it is obvious to me that this release will live up to that expectation. Now that the second deadline has past, it appears that only a few themes are left. Of these, all of them would make great themes. My favorites, though, are these:

  • I found the Solar theme promising from early on, but this is just amazing. Seriously, I don’t care what distribution (or operating system) you run, go to the wiki page and download the wallpaper and try using it as your desktop background. As an added benefit, the creator of this theme has already made drafts of how this wallpaper would look as it changes throughout the day. Plus, the supporting artwork for this theme looks great, too.  Wiki Page
  • To be perfectly honest, I did not like the early drafts of this theme, and I still do not particularly like the bright gold versions, but the version at the left is really, really nice. The blend of slightly faded golden and beige gears on the dark blue background works really well. I also like that this wallpaper is not completely, or even almost completely, one color, as many are. After seeing this theme transform from something way, way too shiny for me into something absolutely beautiful, I cannot wait to see how this theme evolves. Wiki Page
  • Though much simpler than the other theme proposals, it keeps the common simple blue, while adding some nice bright (neon) highlights. Ultimately, we will just have to see what kind of theme people are looking for. Most previous Fedora releases have had fairly complicated themes, but one went with something simpler. Both approaches have merit, we just have to see what happens. Wiki Page

Based on what I can see on the Fedora wiki, I am extremely optimistic about Fedora 10. I just can’t wait to see the final product. Live review, perhaps?

Also, if all you want to say is something like "Linux sucks. Get real," please don't say it. It doesn't help anything. (Plus, you're wrong. :-))

The Solar artwork is downright genius. I have never seen such a beautiful artwork or concept for Gnome, and really makes it stand apart. I’ve never used Fedora, but one thing is for sure, they work hard and are damn creative people. I wonder if the guy who did Solar has worked on other themes, or will continue to do so after this? That’s one person to follow in the art department.

  2. fengshaun Says:

    I like Solar the best!!!!!!

  3. sn Says:

The cogs wallpaper (not a theme btw) is the only one the looks cohesive. The others lack direction and bring disjointed elements together.

  4. sn Says:

Also what do any of them say about Fedora? Is it a space ship, or a clock, or a disco application?

  5. gus3 Says:

    @sn:

In answer to your last question:

    Yes.

  6. spk Says:

InvinXble (http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Artwork/F10Themes/InvinXble) is the best theme they got.

It is a sad state looking at these themes. To be a winner on the desktop Linux distros need more than coders.

  7. neo Says:

    sn,

Maybe it says you can stop being a dick and learn to appreciate good artwork.

  8. Klaus Says:

I like the one with the cogwheels, it’s absolutely perfect and beautiful.

  9. kuba Says:

The second one is really awesome.

  10. Oskar Says:

Well, the first one is seriously cool… I’d like to see that one in final release. The second is also good. The third… not really.

How about all of the above? Plus many other things. Remember
that the longstanding promise of a computer is that it’s capable of anything subject to the constraints of the hardware and operating system

    Gnome-Look.org
    KDE-Look.org

  13. Forester1 Says:

Go to the wiki and download the wallpaper? It has a 500×316 image there “No higher resolution available”. Sorry, but I need more pixels!

  14. Cliff Wells Says:

I’m definitely with the steampunk theme. I like that it deviates from the traditional look of previous Fedora releases and is obviously rich with metaphor for objects and actions (although I’d prefer to see a steampunk icon set to finish it out, rather than the rather generic one slated to ship with F10).

I’m not sure that a theme needs to “say” anything about a distro… I’m hard pressed to think of any theme on any distro (or even OS) that says much at all about the underlying technology. I think the primary concerns should be attractiveness, consistency and originality.

  15. Release Candidate Says:

Mmmm… @Forester1 there’s a link somewhere in the wiki where u can download the background, anyone you may like. Look hard, it’s not hidden :P

  16. TDR Says:

Wow! That’s a really nice 450-pixel wide column you have there. It almost fills a third of my browser window.

  17. ignacio Says:

    @Forester1:

Did you try the link that says “Source XCF”? More think, less complain.

  18. gfxmonk Says:

spk is spot on. These are pretty rubbish.

  19. amazimo Says:

    “Amazing”

    LMAO

(luckily im not forced to work with fc10)

  20. w0mprat Says:

There is some fantastic digital art out there in the world wide wibble that sets the bar VERY high, so to call this ‘amazing’ begs me to ask…
Was this blog post some kind of joke?

The fact that linuxheads think these half-arse amateur artworks are amazing explains why linux is still ugly compared to well just about everything else.

Infact, a google image search reveals thousands wallpapers and themes with royalty free licences that look better than this trite.

They should actually try and entice some actual designer/artists to do some creative commons licenced art.

Personally I think Ubuntu and others are starting to look good, since they don’t try to be too wow, although 9/10 ubuntu users go get a real theme from some of the great stuff available. Mint, Mandriva are ghastly…

  21. Lin Baden Says:

They all look like caca to me.

  22. nico Says:

it’s funny to read all these genius of art complaining: if these wallpaper suck why don’t you guys submit better ones?

Btw my Fedora 10 looks better than any windows system I used; plus is way faster and stable.

  23. Number3 Says:

I’m loving the first 2 themes.

I don’t think in the history of art has a piece of work been universally agreed upon as being good or bad. So it’s a shame to see people dis artwork like this and then go off on a tangent that no one is interested in. My only advice to them is to….. change the theme to something you like, post a picture of it and talk about how great it looks to you; then go ….. (use your imagination)
