Top 4 New Feature Proposed for Fedora 10

Since I have been writing about Ubuntu a lot recently, I thought I would look at some proposed features for Fedora 10. No features have been officially approved yet, so these are just proposals.

  1. Web-Based Software Portal - Somewhat similar to CNR or Linux Mint, it looks like Fedora might have a website users could visit and search for software on. To install the software, they would presumably download a small file that tells a special program how to install the program.

  2. Live CD Without the CD - Instead of creating a program like Wubi to let you do a special partitioning-free installation from Windows, the plan here is to make a Windows program that essentially lets you run the live CD straight from the ISO image on your hard drive.

  3. Improved Support for Fingerprint Readers - This means not only supporting the hardware, but also making it easy to use a recognized fingerprint reader as a primary (instead of a password) or secondary (in addition to a password) form of authentication.W

  4. Fedora Lite - Similar to how Ubuntu has Xubuntu, a variant designed for older computers, Fedora could create “Fedora Lite,” a version of Fedora for older/less powerful computers.

Obviously, there is no guarantee that these features will be part of Fedora 10, but if they are, it looks like it could be an incredible release, particularly for new users.

Also, if all you want to say is something like "Linux sucks. Get real," please don't say it. It doesn't help anything. (Plus, you're wrong. :-))

for “Live CD Without the CD”

this already exists in ubuntu, i think this is Unetbootin.

    http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

i do not burn the ISO’s and waste CD’s.

this is great specially to try out the Alfas, betas and RC’s without wasting a million CDs

also if the person does not have a DVD writer this is great.

The isos can be of any size and i wont need to have the equipment to burn or know how to burn.

If ubuntu focus on this and had an iso image bundled with unetbootin, they could create a better release with more packages and drivers without the constrains of it being 700mb exact.

they should have a complete release and a smaller isos/installers

the live-USB is a good idea, but many will need to upgrade their USB sticks from 256/512mb to 1GB or more. Also, many of the older PCs don’t support or fully support bootin from USB

i think Unetbootin is the future. but the fedora approach might be even more advanced, so competition is good.

    lets see how it goes

  2. Rahul Sundaram Says:

Fedora lite is not really like Xubuntu. Fedora Xfce Spin is. Fedora Lite is targeted towards systems with even less resources.

  3. Miguel Says:

#1 presumably is exactly what opensuse users already have since 10.3; it’s called ‘one click install’. See: http://software.opensuse.org/search . Good move, anyway.

  4. Paul Houle Says:

    #4 interests me.

I recently wanted to install a modern Linux on an older laptop, to use as an “always on” file and media server in my house.

The machine didn’t have a DVD reader, and the Live CD was unable to bootstrap an install because the machine didn’t have enough RAM.

I ended up installing Ubuntu on the machine instead. This has worked out OK, but personally I like the RedHat/Fedora way of doing things better than Debian, and I’d rather be running Fedora.

I couldn’t care less for #1-#3, though, someday, it would be nice to have a distro based on CoLinux that runs on 64-bit Vista.

  5. Vasileios Anagnostopoulos Says:

    Let me add some wishes

I would like an L4Fedora (as in L4Linux)
I would like a PJLMon utility (like in Windows)
I would like OpenCL (as in Apple’s proposal) support for ATI / Intel video cards
I would like Fedora to rule the World (though I m late)

  6. shollomon Says:

Here’s a brainwave: How about X that works with Nvidia drivers out of the box? How about an easy way to get audio and video codecs that desktop users want to use? How about an easy way to get real flash? How about a dialog to set properties in individual Gnome screen savers? How about suspend and resume that works dead solid every time, out of the box? How about decent support for multiple monitors/external monitors on laptops and monitors and sound through docking stations?

Users want everything they expect to work to work out of the box without fiddling. Don’t talk about new features until the little stuff, things that require no thought or user input at all in windows or mac, all works correctly, first time, every time. Pay some attention to fit and finish. I know its not as fun, but it makes all the difference between a truly usable system and one that’s merely tolerable.

  7. Danilo Câmara Says:

I had the same problem as the poster above. My old laptop wasn’t able to boot Live CD, stayed in endless swapping. Fedora 9 XFCE live wasn’t available at the time. I set up an NFS server with the install DVD and made a network install. Running XFCE fine now.

  8. Jeni Says:

I support Linux 100% but I feel that people should make an objective decision for themselves after reading The Truth about Linux.

  9. G Fernandes Says:

shollomon: These goals are not compatible with Fedora’s goal - see http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/ForbiddenItems. There are millions of good reasons for these - in my opinion - very wise decision.

If you feel otherwise, there are a significant number of GNU/Linux distributions that fulfill your needs. Please feel free to not use Fedora and choose any of those instead.

  10. G Fernandes Says:

    shollomon:

As for the others that ARE compatible - i.e. better suspend/resume and multiple monitors - these are works in progress. Progress may seem slow, but it is held up by many issues - you can follow most of these discussions at the kernel mailing list.

As hardware power and interface standardisation efforts improve, so will these features.

It’s more than a little unreasonable to blame Fedora (or any other GNU/Linux distribution) for something that’s out of their control and clearly not their fault.

  11. DC Hart Says:

Perhaps they should make a renewed commitment to the 3.x branch of kDE. For many business users, KDE4 is a disaster and has kept me from upgrading to 9 until I have the time and energy to install and then compile KDE from source. Sometimes OLD features are better. By the way, I also agree with the commenter regarding X and nVidia. Again, I find myself stuck on FC8.

  12. Speed Demon Says:

I hope the new pkg thing is optional, so u can just use yum and/or package kit, as the web portal thing for packages is what turned me away from linux mint, right back to where i started… Fedora (PS I like fedora best even over ubuntu but i use ubuntu cuz nm-applet would not work for me… :( )

  13. cornel panceac Says:

considering that f9 runs just fine (runlevel 3) on my old pentium150/48mb fujitsu laptop, i’ll be very happy to see a fedora version wich can be directly installed onto it, instead of yum upgrading from fc5. also i do not understand why do we have to use an installer wich limits the usage of fedora to gui-capable machines.

  14. Ankur Gupta Says:

I really want to install fedora on my PC. But it does not has WUBI.
hey fedora developers! Please make WUBI like installer for FEDORA.

I am completely sure that it will increase usasge of Fedora.
The main barrier(for home user) to use linux is installing it on seperate partition with windows.

I use Ubuntu with WUBI. I like it very much. Please Please Please create WUBI for Fedora. Please Please Please.
