Interesting Early Artwork for Intrepid Ibex

With Intrepid Ibex Alpha 1 out the door, I decided to take an early look at some of the cool new proposed artwork for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex. Obviously, the artwork out now is likely to change a lot, but it is still interesting.

“Clear”

This theme very much maintains the current brown-orange theme, even making it a little darker, but manages to make it look really smooth with the gradients. Paired with a new background, this could be a real candidate for a final theme. My only concern is that it could be too dark and, therefore, unappealing to some people.

“Sunny Ibex”

Going for a much lighter feel and nicely incorporating the Ibex, this background could appeal to those who dislike brown. In fact, this might be a great choice as a color base, because of its lighter feel.

“Kith Intrepid”

Another theme that looks like a potential candidate for the final release, although this theme goes for a lighter, more orange look, which could be a plus or a minus, depending on your tastes.

“MadsRH”

This is certainly an interesting and new idea for the boot up process. I do not know how difficult this would be to implement, but it would be cool.

“Everything Moves”

This last idea has no images to show off, but it still attracted my attention. To quote from the description:

“the ultimate aim being that whenever a user passes a mouse over any icon or a window bar or clicks or minimizes or maximizes a window or opens a menu there is a number of different rapid responses, colorful little glows everywhere whenever something is done, nice little sparkles or ripples when an icon is added to a desktop”

This sort of eyecandy would not be too intrusive or annoying, but would be incredibly cool.

I hope this quick preview of some of the possible artwork for Intrepid Ibex has been interesting. Hopefully the final artwork will be even cooler!

Also, if all you want to say is something like "Linux sucks. Get real," please don't say it. It doesn't help anything. (Plus, you're wrong. :-))

the only problem is that we have too many mockups.

people need to get started with their themes, else none will be available on time and we’ll have to keep the old theme.

is not hard to make a theme, gnome-look is full of them.

Please give alternative to the UGLY brown themes

  3. Jimbo Says:

Both those themes (Clear & Kith) are really nasty looking. If they use either of those I can tell you now that the people who bitterly complain about Ubuntu being fugly will not be silenced.

People want Ubuntu to move away from the browns and peach colours. Simply doing a more glossy version of this or any other sort of variation is not going to do it. People want a real design shift towards something sexy.

I sometimes think Ubuntu would be better off if they just played it safe and copied Fedora through and through, cept where Blue is used instead use orange. Their own designs just don’t cut it.

I wonder if the visual refresh also applies to Kubuntu?

    About the “Clear”-theme:

“My only concern is that it could be too dark” … personally, my only concern is, that it’s a horrible, ugly usability nightmare.
Just look at that thing, it looks hopelessly unprofessional and it makes the content of the windows almost illegible, that’s how bad the contrasts and colors were chosen. And the author even believes that it looks ok like that since he considers his mockup and planning stages final.

“Kith” at least seems to be going in the right direction. While revision .2 is still far from a great or even a good theme, the author shows some knowledge about usability and design which is more than most mock-up artists for Ubuntu ever do. And at least the usability wouldn’t suffer much even if revision .2 would be implemented.

Oh how much I long for a clean, professional and high quality theme for Ubuntu.

Why hasn’t someone made a CSI type GUI?

  7. Orlando Says:

All this themes are ugly, they look geeky and amateurish. Wanna see something beautiful? Take a look at Mac OS or Vista!! Ubuntu needs to drop the oranges and browns, it looks like…

  8. Yaro Says:

I am happy to see some new themes… but I’m a little disappointed to hear they’re keeping the ugly orange and brown.

YES, I know I can change those colors and likely will… but it’s ugly. I think some people just use Kubuntu for its blue theme.

  9. TayzGpa Says:

I am trying to be an exWindows person and am using Ubuntu 8.04 as much as I can. I really would like to see some other other color besides the dark browns, etc. It’s almost depressing looking at the drab colors when working in Ubuntu.
I have tried Kubuntu and like it’s color scheme, but I like the Ubuntu distro better for it’s software.

  10. Curtis Says:

The Dark Brown Theme is Looking Lovely but th Background Art Work is looking Nasty. Now Because Ubuntu is a South African Linux Distro , Why Not have some Art Work from African.Art Work like the land Scape and Animals , People.

I don’t like this theme. It’s very ugly.
