I was window shopping (no pun intended) for a small laptop and since I had worked with Linux I started to look at the Eee 901. After talking a look at price/features between the XP and Linux versions, Linux won. The price was 100$ less for Linux version and had a 16 GB SD on it (4 GB more than the XP).

That being said, I also quite taken by the quick boot time and application startup times.

As it stands, the Eee pc is even (in Canada) by 50$ in comparison to most published prices in the US. That also wowed me to get it.

I saw another vid showing an eee PC 901 tarting up in under 30 seconds. I can't see the point of TxtEdMacs comments. I think that bootup time is extremely important with these, much more important than with desktops. My attraction with them is to use them when on site -- printing invoices -- downloading files for customers on dialup -- testing set-ups etc etc. I want something that will start up as quick as possible. Unfortunately, I'll have to go with the XP version as not all applications are supported on Linux yet and even some websites I use only work with IE.
I think that database speed is also extremely important -- It all depends on your application. I had a terabyte database and sometimes the structure of the data and the code ends up not looking the clearest to change a 5 hour query to a 1 minute query.

What version of firefox, what type of windows, was windows tweaked... etc etc

It would be nice to see what you're comparing exactly. Just by the by, do you have an eee pc?

@Wally

"You didn’t know that great of IE is already loaded when Windows XP is booted? So obviously, it’s far from fair to compare IE startup time with FF, because you can’t even measure actual IE startup time on Windows XP."

In which case your point is kinda mute because as Windows loads IE at boot then the Linux/Windows boot time numbers are not fair as Windows is taking longer to boot due to it pre-loading other applications to make the real world experience quicker.

Seriously.. you guys make me laugh.. let the people make the choice.. both have their merits.. it really doesnt need flames one way or the other..

It looks like the MS Trolls are about again.

Trying to say that XP has the same performance as the Linux version!. AS soon as you install the required patches and virus and spyware programs, the performance gets even worse...

The program comparisons are way of trac as well, why bother with XP and its substandard default application set, unless you want to tinker... In the end Linux wins with its ability to be customized for resource limited UMPC's, far better then windows. And at no additional cost.

Steve:
"Works and IE comes with the XP version, OpenOffice and Firefox comes with the Linux version. Totally fair comparison. Features could be argued elsewhere, that’s not what the article was about."

You didn't know that great of IE is already loaded when Windows XP is booted? So obviously, it's far from fair to compare IE startup time with FF, because you can't even measure actual IE startup time on Windows XP.

You want a fair comparison? Compare IE on Windows and Dillo on Linux, Not really, but use Opera on both platform for that instead. Then compare MS Works with Gnome Office (Abiword, gnumeric). Ok, you maybe got my point already.

If I had an Eee PC, I would either use XFCE + Firefox + Abiword + gnumeric or KDE + Firefox + KOffice. OpenOffice is maybe the best office suite you can get, but it's a bit too bloated. On KDE, i could use Konqueror instead of Firefox to get an advantage in speed and memory usage, but I dislike the user interface.

Also, in machines like this, I would use very light multimedia apps that would start instantly.

It is obvious that the Linux version will consume less resources... there is no point in arguing that.

Speed, memory consumption, disk space, and battery life are overall much better in the eeepc with Linux. And boot time is far more important than starting solitaire.

That is why you can install Linux in a 486 with graphical environment but it is impossible to do the same with Xp (not to talk about Vista).

This is such a ridiculous flame war. Not a single _real_ fact has been presented in the comments, nor has either side accomplished anything. Yes, the metrics given in the post are not sufficient to compare Xandros to Windows XP. Deal with it.
