How Many Linux UMPCs Can You Name? Test Yourself.

Ever since the success of the Eee PC*, it seems like there has been a new Linux-based UMPC every day, so I decided to compile a list of them. After reading this list, if anyone still doubts that the Linux UMPC market is expanding, I will be very surprised.

Many of these I have written about before, but others I was not even aware of. I just found them from a Google search, so if you know of any more that I did not include, please let me know!

* = Actually, in doing some Googling, I found quite a few that came before the Eee PC.

Below is the list of the 18 18+ (thanks to commenters) Linux-based UMPCs I found/knew about. See how many of them you can name before you look!

  1. Eee PC
  2. CloudBook
  3. OLPC
  4. Noahpad
  5. HP 2133
  6. Elonex One
  7. Gecko Laptop
  8. Intel’s MID(s) - Yeah, yeah, I know it is a “MID” not a “UMPC.” Who really cares?
  9. BPETD H9
  10. EB MIMD
  11. eo TufTab v7112XT
  12. Pepper Pad
  13. Lime PC
  14. Simple PC
  15. ECS G10IL
  16. WING
  17. Unnamed Acer UMPC - Linux on this device is not confirmed, but quite possible
  18. Gigabyte M528 MID
  19. Nokia N810, N800, N770
  20. Zaurus

And the award for the worst name ever goes to… the eo TufTab v7112XT! Who thought that up?

Note: Many of the devices above may have not yet been released or confirmed by the manufacturer and many of them are also quite old.

Also, if all you want to say is something like "Linux sucks. Get real," please don't say it. It doesn't help anything. (Plus, you're wrong. :-))

UMPC ? what does it mean ?

I own both an Nokia Tablet (770) and an Asus eeePC and I´m sure they are not the same animal.

the Tablet is smaller with a non-PC architecture (it is ARM and not Intel based).

As I think both are very useful gadgets, they are not for the same use. I should make a better criteria of what is a UMPC.

If you’re including the Nokia N series here, then you MUST mention the Sharp Zaurus series.
