ODF Is Being Replaced

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Linux Insider reports that the OpenDocument Foundation is adopting a new file format, CDF or Compound Document Format developed by W3C (The World Wide Web Consortium), to replace the ISO-approved ODF file format. The OpenDocument Foundation says that the ODF file format was not made to handle some things they would like it to do, so they are adopting the W3C’s CDF.

Curious about Hardy?

Monday, October 29th, 2007

Curious about Hardy Heron? (Ubuntu’s upcomming release after Gutsy and also a long-term support release.) Softpedia puts out in plain english some of the main (expected) features of Hardy Heron. Of course, it is VERY early and some features may not make it in to the final release, but other new features will be added. In short, read this now; forget about it in a couple of months and find a new article.

Mozilla’s Prism to Bridge the Gap Between Web and App

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

According to a story by Linux Insider, Mozilla is working on creating a new application to take any web applications without re-coding and make the user experience more like that of a regular application.

For Linux, as well as other non-Windows operating systems, these kinds of applications and the move to web applications could greatly speed adoption. One of the main issues with changing your main operating system is the applications that you use everyday or need for your job, and if you could use those effortlessly on any operating system it would not only speed the adoption of operating systems such as Linux, but also increase competition in the operating system market for all operating systems, because it would be easy to switch to whatever operating system you want.

The New KDE 4 File Manager: Dolphin

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

Rudd-O.com recently posted a look at the new KDE 4 file manager to replace Konqueror. Although there is nothing really exciting about a new file manager, it is very nice to see the old one, Konqueror, replaced, because I always found it to be one of the few annoying features of KDE.

GPL v3 - Is it being adopted?

Friday, October 19th, 2007

The GPL v3 news is back again. This time the argument is if it is being adopted by open-source projects fast enough. Basically, according to a Linux.com article, some groups are saying that the adoptions of GPL v3 is too slow, but the people from the FSF (Free Software Foundation) are saying that the rate of adoption is just fine. (Anyone reminded of Vista? Microsoft says its doing well, but not everyone agress.)

I have to side with the FSF people. GPL v2 was released a long time ago, so you really can’t compare the adoption of GPL v3 to anything else. The bigger question, though, is does it matters at all to the average open-source software user?

(Note: I am not stating any opinion (because I don’t have one) about GPL v3.)
