One of the most overlooked features of the upcoming Ubuntu 9.04 amidst the attention is the ability to add repositories via Apt-URL.
Apt-URL is a tool that lets anyone put a link on their website that essentially runs the command apt-get install <package name>. For example, click here to install tux paint. Both the blessing and the curse of this is that it can only install packages from the repositories already added on the computer. On one hand, this prevents malicious software installation, but, on the other hand, it makes it impossible to use it to easily install the latest version of software or lesser known software.
As of Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04, though, you can add repositories, too. To solve the security issue, you are only able to add whitelisted repositories.
This system does not allow complete feeedom of easy installation, but it does what it needs to do in order to maintain security, while enabling the easiest possible installation of software.

Nice feature. I’m glad that this won’t allow software that isn’t already in the repo to be installed. Security first. If you want ease over security then there is another popular operating system out there. This also means that for users of 100% Free software systems such as gNewSense there isn’t a risk of installing non-free software, provided there is none in the distro’s repos.
I for one, I can’t wait for http://playdeb.net. They are coming back in full when this is solved.
sounds logical, nice feature.
