Maternitus,
I do something similar, building Linux computers for disadvantaged kids. I made a custom version of Ubuntu for them, with kid-friendly games and a simplified XFCE desktop, and I'd be happy to mail you an install CD. If you're interested you can check it out at http://www.quinncoincorporated.org/ and you can email me at info@quinncoincorporated.org

Maternitus Says:

"My next project, paid out of my own (nearly empty) pocket will be building computers from older parts, install Linux on them and just give them away to children of less fortunate families."

I suggest that you find a place to volunteer your labor like Wincycle in Windsor, VT in USA (http://www.wincycle.org) that accepts otherwise discarded computers for recycling. Note that Wincycle operates a 'thrift shop' where computers are available to schools, non-profit organizations, and the general public at low prices.

Indeed the IBM Thinkpad T40 laptop computer that I am currently running (originally ran Windows XP Professional, now runs Kubuntu 8.04) came from Wincycle about a year ago.

As the Linux 'guru' in such a place, you ought to be able to offer Linux as a viable alternative to Windows, run computer classes on using Linux instead of Windows, troubleshoot specific user problems, etc. Last but not least, you ought to try to reserve several very different machines during beta testing of a new release of a distribution (like Ubuntu) to look for machine specific issues, as well as garden variety glitches!

Hello there,

As an enthousiastic Linux-user I am posting, pretty much, twice a week a post about Open Source subjects and Linux in particular. These are written in Dutch, so most of the visitors from here can not understand them.

Also do I volunteer in a project to get the elderly involved in internet and computers. I use Mandriva and Ubuntu for that, with a desktop made ready for them: big fonts and icons, speech-to-text-to-speech, a webcam with Skype and a good guidance.

My next project, paid out of my own (nearly empty) pocket will be building computers from older parts, install Linux on them and just give them away to children of less fortunate families. This way they can learn about computing, have somehow access to technology and learn about the internet.

My christmas got screwed, but don't let yours be!
