My Linux Dreams 2008

As a reminder, please submit your Linux dream.

Today I wanted to share my top five dreams for 2008. Once again, if you didn’t read the original post (see above), these are not supposed to be realistic, just dreams for the future of Linux.

  1. Better artwork in Ubuntu and other distributions. Artwork may not be the most important thing in a distribution, but it definitly makes an impression and contributes to your experience using your computer.
  2. More solid options for computers pre-installed with Linux. We already have Dell, System76, and ZaReason, but more would be even better. Ideally, every major OEM would sell machines with Linux.
  3. Perfect WINE support for Windows applications. I would love to be able to install and use any piece of Windows software easily. This would also be great for users migrating to Linux.
  4. Stabler, less buggy Linux. Linux is already very stable and generally works quite well, but when something does mess up, it is very annoying. I would love to see a bug-free Linux.
  5. More mainstream attention to Linux. Linux already gets a little attention in the mainstream media, both tech and non-tech, but it would nice to see it covered just as much as Windows or OS X.

Those are just my dreams for the coming year. You can submit yours here.

What about a kitchen sink? Linux definitely needs a kitchen sink.

  2. Drew says:

Better audio support would help, I’m still getting errors recording using the DSP device.

  3. Guess Who says:

“A bug free Linux” by your own admittance is impossible (look at reply to first post). That goes for any and all software. So wise up, don’t expect the impossible.
As far as #1 is concerned I completely agree. Ubuntu needs to do a waaaaaaaayyy better job with art work.
Linux definitely needs a “I am a MAC I am a PC I am Linux” ad to work in its favor.
Nice post. I would have added better wireless support on all distros and most importantly for Linux to converge on 3-7 distros at most. Currently at 500+ distros and growing this is highly redundant and useless. All brain power is lost on nothing.

  4. swiftnet says:

I’d love to see E17 released. It is my favorite desktop/window manager.

  5. usamahashimi says:

What about codecs and restricted drivers? These also should be included out of the box!

  6. JJMacey says:

    Hi All,

I would really, really enjoy better WiFi card support.

  7. you moron says:

    moron,
you typed this article using front page on windows and talking big on linux. (Ed. Note: That is not in any way, shape, or form true. I have not touched Front Page in 5 years and wouldn’t bother too if did run Windows. I typed this on a Dell running Ubuntu 8.04 through the WordPress (open-source) web interface running on Apache (open-source) on a Linux server.)

linux is not buggy at all. start using opensuse 11.1 and wake up. (Ed. Note 2: All software is buggy. May I recommend a visit to Launchpad.)

(Ed Note 3: If this was sarcasm, it was poorly done. If it wasn’t, it is proof that I will publish just about any comment.)
