I have a Dell XPS M1530 that came with (remove small children from the room if you're reading this aloud) Vista. I have 8.04 installed on a partition with a dual-boot setup. I was just playing around with Skype and discovered that the mikes don't work. Thanks for your tip, I was able to fix the problem easily from Ubuntu's documentation. Skype's forum wasn't as helpful, but might be for a different problem.

Thanks for the suggestion, but both ports are labeled as headphone ports and the Dell website advertises it:

http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/xpsnb_m1530?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

It does appear the the computer recognizes the port as line in, though. This is a solution from the Dell wiki, although it did not work for me:

AFAIK, Dell XPS has Line in, Mic and Audio Out ports. That may be why is your "2nd headphones" not working....
