After doing a guide for a beginner setting up a new computer with Ubuntu, I decided to follow up with some Ubuntu setup tips for more advanced users:

1. Consider a Custom Theme
   In the beginner’s version of this guide, I suggested users looking for a new theme install Blubuntu, but as an advanced user, I would recommend creating your own theme. To start, check out this guide and gnome-look.org.
2. Create any Panel Shortcuts You Might Want
   Think about if there are applications or utilities you use a lot. Then, add those shortcuts to one of the panels or the desktop. Believe me, it will save you time.
3. Install a Bandwidth Monitor
   If you have a cap on your bandwidth or if you are just curious, install a bandwidth monitor, such as vnstat. This will let you see how much bandwidth you have used on different network interfaces in different amounts of time.
4. Install VirtualBox or Other Virtualization Software
   Even if you do not use it immediately, it is very likely that at some point you will want to run another OS, either to test it or to actually use it. Just go ahead and install VirtualBox. You will probably be glad you did at some point.
5. Create a Test User Account
   If you are like me, you will probably end up wanting to test out some piece of software or new theme. In these cases, it can be good to use a test account, so you don’t accidentally mess up something in your real account.
