Brilliant Brainstorms is a weekly-ish summary of some of the best brainstorms from the Ubuntu Brainstorm site. In the beginning it may not always come exactly once a week or on the same day, but, if it becomes popular, it should become more regular.
This week I have been very glad to see lots of posts on the Brainstorm Blog. I particularly like the ones that show developer’s thoughts on various Brainstorm ideas. If you don’t already read the Brainstorm Blog, I really recommend you check it out.
I know I must have talked about this at least a couple of times before, but just a few easy-to-apply quality themes would stop a lot of the “I don’t like brown” criticism.
I realize that the Synaptic Package Manager is intended as a more advanced feature, but it would still be nice to clean up the interface, possibly making it easier to understand/use.
Since Fluendo has already negotiated deals to sell legal media codecs for Linux, it would be very nice if Canonical sold a version of Ubuntu that came with legal codes installed. This would also be a way for Canonical/Ubuntu to make some more money.
As I have said before, there are certain tasks that can either be accomplished by a small utility or be built seamlessly into the operating system. Although tasks like this are often not used by the majority of users, when they are needed it is useful to have them built right into the OS.
The more you have to edit config files, the less professional the operating system appears. Unfortunately, to change the GRUB entries you still need to edit a config file. There are, however, programs available to provide a GUI for editing those config files, they just need to be included in Ubuntu.
There are lots of great, free wallpapers out there, but you have to go look for them. Instead, you could be lazy and just press a button. Seriously, just pressing a button and getting a random, cool walpaper sounds great!
